The Library Is Open is an exclusive ‘audio book’ series from Star2.com and TheStarTV.com that features Malaysian and international writers, authors, poets, playwrights and screenwriters reading their work. In Ep #2, actor-writer-director Gavin Yap reads from his first book How I Made My First Movie (Or A Decade Of Favours), which chronicles the making of his first film Take Me To Dinner. In his book, Gavin explains in comic detail how he planned his film directorial debut without much of a budget, how he pulled strings everywhere he could, and how he got an ensemble of talented actors (Patrick Teoh and Susan Lankester included) to work with him for practically nothing. In this reading, Gavin describes his negotiations with the film censorship board over some adult language in the script. Gavin has been involved in the Malaysian entertainment scene since the 1990s. His stage credits include The Importance Of Being Ernest, Hamlet and The Fastest Clock In The Universe. He served as Director-In-Residence at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre from 2005 to 2008, and in 2007 he was awarded the National Arts Award for directing.
